American colleges provide some of the best graduate and undergraduate programs in the world, and open its doors to build successful careers in the US.
To get started on this path, you need to understand a few points. And we’re here to share with you key fact around colleges in the United States:
There are three types of institutions to study at in the US:
Two-year colleges, often called "junior" or "community" colleges.
This is a very popular choice for many students, as it can serve as an academic bridge to a four-year college.
It's a more affordable option for families who can't afford all the costs of a traditional college. On average it costs $13,000 in total.
There are almost 1000 community colleges in the United States, the best of which, according to a WalletHub survey, are:
1. State Technical College of Missouri (State Tech): located in the city of Linn, MI. It offers more than 35 advanced technical training programs for emerging and traditional technologies.
2. College of San Mateo: located near Silicon Valley, it is known for its connections with nearby technology companies and offers around 150 degree and certificate programs.
3. Butte College, another public institution. It was founded in 1967 and is located about 120 kilometers from Sacramento, CA. Today, the school has around 200 courses and serves more than 17,000 students.
4. Ohlone College, a community college that is larger than usual for this type of institution. In total, there are three campuses serving more than 15,000 students. Students can choose from 190 programs, including associate degrees aimed at transfers to full colleges.
5. Los Angeles Pierce College, if you want a good college to transfer to a traditional university, Los Angeles Pierce College is an excellent option, it is among the community colleges that most transfers to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)
6. There's also Hillsborough Community College, located in Tampa, Florida; Peralta Community College District, in Oakland, California; and Shoreline Community College, located in Shoreline, Washington, which are also recognized and more affordable.
Four-year public colleges
Public four-year colleges grant bachelor's degrees but are partially funded by the state and federal government, meaning they can charge less for tuition.
Some of the top public colleges in the US are the University of California, the University of Michigan and the University of North Carolina. On average, public four-year colleges in the US have a total cost of $70,000 (including tuition, housing and other costs).
Private four-year colleges
These are privately funded institutions that are highly selective with admissions and therefore have a smaller number of students.
These are universities like Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, which have a strong reputation.
They are generally more expensive options and can cost an average of $320,000 in total (tuition, housing and other costs).
What you need to pay to study at a university in the USA:
Tuition: this is the annual payment for university classes, depending on the semester and specialization chosen.
Housing and food: this is the next big cost to consider when starting college in the USA. In the first year, most colleges require you to live on campus.
College materials: you will need money to buy a laptop and essential items to attend college.
In addition to these factors, it will also influence the cost and which college you will be able to study at, whether you prefer a full-time, part-time or 100% virtual course.
How do I apply to university in the United States?
For public and private four-year colleges you can apply through an online application platform, like SISU in Brazil. It's a more complete system that considers your high school transcript, extracurricular activities, standardized test scores and a 650-word essay on a specific topic.
As for the two-year colleges, the community colleges, you must apply for each one individually on the university's own platform.
There are differences between the requirements of each of the community colleges but, in general, they ask you to:
- Register on the university's platform.
- Fill in the application form.
- Submit a copy of your high school diploma and transcript (with a sworn translation into English).
- Present your English proficiency certificate;
- Submit your personal documents (such as passport).
